Xiaocheng Hu studied at The National School of the Arts (2014) and thereafter completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts degree (2018) and Post Graduate Certificate in Education (2020) at The University of the Witwatersrand. Hu moved with his family to Knysna in 2015.
In Hu’s works he explores various cultural spheres between his Chinese ancestry, South African upbringing, and the impact of Western cultural dominance in our artistic practices. He work in various mediums ranging from painting, drawing to printmaking. Subject matters in both figuration, abstraction and mix media. The materiality of paint ,mark making, and colour plays a vital role in his artworks. Hu has participated in exhibitions with David Krut Projects and BKhz Studio and Gallery both based in Johannesburg.
