From my childhood days I remember always studying the faces of people intently, trying to see beyond their eyes to trace the mysterious paths their thoughts created. I was curious to know what secrets were beyond their brave words and wondered where their vulnerabilities and heartaches lay hidden.
Glancing back at my experiences as child, friend and mother, I have become my own muse. I paint strictly from my own thoughts that I have accumulated in the visual library of my mind. By painting this way, an emotion filled with subtle vulnerability of my chosen character will often present itself on the canvas.
I work mainly in oils and am fascinated with texture and transparency.
Some elements tend to repeat themselves in my work:
- the bold frames that represent boundaries
- the radiant crown depicting a safe space of permeable light harbouring peace and harmony
- the presence of leaves and berries suggest growth and abundance
- the eyes – I am only satisfied once the portrait’s eyes conveys a specific emotion.
