Gary Davis burst onto the charcoal art scene in Knysna during 2018 with the start of his “cub series”, a magnificent set of charcoal drawings in which he depicts several scenes of a young leopard cub experiencing human contact for the very first time.
Born in 1970 to a humble family in Germiston, South Africa, Gary Davis has dabbled in art since the age of 5, he completed his National Diploma in Graphic Design at Witwatersrand Technicon in 1991; fortunately, the lure of Advertising could not compete with Gary’s love of charcoal, his magnificent works are mostly characterized as highly detailed photorealistic abstract scenes in deep grey and black velvety expanses of charcoal on backgrounds of pure white.
To date Gary Davis has only ever exhibited his works on a private invitation only basis at his home studio, he has marketed several charcoal works and private commissions not only to collectors in South Africa but also abroad in Europe, UK and USA. Gary plans to hold his first ever public exhibition in his hometown of Knysna in the not too distant future.
